From the first of April, the MST (landless movement) has started occupying a lot of rural properties in order to draw attention to the dramatic incidence of violence in the rural zone and the bad land distribution in Brazil. So far there are 46 ocupations, mobilizing 15,127 families in 13 of Brazil´s states and according to the moviment there are a lot more still to come.

The month of April is a month of struggle for the movement, as on April 17th of 1996, 19 landless people were killed and another 69 were seriously hurt (2 have since died of their wounds) during police repression of landless people that were blocking the highway PA-150 next the Eldorado dos Carajás´s Town, in Para. The blockade was a protest against the slowness of redistribution of land in the region.
