An Inquiry into the Purchase of School Lunches has been set up to investigate suspicions of irregularities in the purchase of school lunches by the Fortaleza Prefecture between 1998 and 2000. During its investigations, the inquiry uncovered the direct involvement of the prefecture and of the State Deputy, Sérgio Benevides (PMDB), in a scheme to favour food supplier companies. It is estimated that around R$1.8 million have been diverted into the bank account of the deputy.
The final report of the inquiry calls for the impeachment of the Mayor, Juraci Magalhães (PMDB), and the removal of the deputy. At the opening of the Legislative Assembly on the 17th of February there was a protest organised by NGOs and student bodies calling for the formation of a Commission of the Legislative Assembly to prosecute Sérgio Benevides. The same will soon be made in the Municipal Chambers of Fortaleza, calling for the obstruction of Mayor Juraci Magalhães (PMDB).
